Name: Sam Winchester
Canon: Supernatural
Age: 26ish
Appearance: Link
Canon Point: End of s5, as he's jumping into the the Cage.
Background: Wiki Link
Personality:
Sam Winchester has not wanted anything more than he’s wanted to be normal.
Unfortunately for him, he is anything but.
On the surface, it might appear to the casual passerby that he really is quite normal. Highly educated and intelligent, perhaps, a little awkward when it comes to some kinds of social interactions, and taller than pretty much anyone else in the room, but looking at him wouldn’t immediately send any signals that he’s anything but a tall and attractive guy.
And those are the pieces of his personality that he wants people to see.
Unfortunately, the truth of Sam is darker, violent, troubled. He’s spent literally almost his entire life on the road, lied to by his father for the first handful of years until his brother tells him the truth about how their father hunts the monsters that hide under your bed and in your closet.
And then he has to learn how to fight them, kill them, and try not to die in the process, all in a lifelong quest to find the demon that took his mother from their family.
It’s not a fair life, and it’s one that Sam never wanted nor asked for. It’s a life that he deliberately left behind, along with the only two blood relatives that remained, in a vain attempt to be what he did want. Normal.
His past came back to haunt him, as it tends to do.
Sam Winchester is a brilliant man. Despite moving from place to place and school to school, he still learned at a rapid pace. His departure from his father and brother took him to college where he planned to go to law school, scoring a near perfect on his LSATs. His ability to research is staggering, which continuously comes in handy during the hunts that the brother’s go on. He also will randomly pull out tidbits of information about various subjects off the top of his head, which insinuates that he is something of a mental sponge, able to hold on to all kind of information quickly over long periods of time.
Given the opportunity, he would be almost guaranteed to be successful, but life didn’t pan out that way.
Instead, he was dragged back into hunting by his brother after his father went missing. Dean is a person that Sam would do anything for. He’s more than just his brother, he’s the person he’s been closest to over the course of his life, someone he constantly looked up to and depended on. Dean essentially acted as his guardian figure, despite only being a handful of years older, due to their father’s frequent monster hunts, and that’s something that leaves a lifelong impression.
There is nothing Sam wouldn’t do for Dean. Nothing.
But Sam and his brother are very different people. While Dean idolized their father, Sam rebelled against him, though that was in part because they were so similar. Their father’s thirst for revenge and Sam’s own darkness clashed, their stubbornness keeping them at odds. Sam wasn’t content with just following orders the way Dean was, which put a wedge between them.
That isn’t to say that Sam didn’t love his father. He simply didn’t want to follow him blindly the same way Dean did. It made Sam out to be the ‘bad son,’ which only further fueled the anger in his gut.
Even with their father now gone, Sam and Dean are often at odds due to their differing personalities and opinions on how they should go about doing things. Despite how much he cares about his brother, he also often feels that he’s constantly not allowed to truly ‘grow up’ and that he’ll always be a kid in Dean’s eyes.
Sam has the tendency to run on this anger, using it to fuel his motivations and direct his life, even as he tries to deny it. He wants desperately to be good, to do what’s right, but even before he discovers anything concrete about his abilities, he seems to know there’s something ‘off’ about himself. The visions he has make him feel like a freak, and the addition of other abilities along with the knowledge that there are others like him with powers he could potentially unlock only makes these feelings worse. Dean’s reactions to them don’t help either, as his brother’s attitude towards him matters more than anyone else’s.
He also has the tendency to sometimes make impulsive decisions, especially when he thinks his brother won’t approve of them or Dean’s life is the one at risk, even though he usually wants to go into a situation with a plan.
Despite his desperate desire to be normal and have a normal life, Sam has accepted that this isn’t something his life is ever going to be. He’s in too deep, and trying to get out only got people hurt and killed, and he knows he’s good at what he does. Even without the hunting, he knows there’s a part of him that enjoys what he does, and if there’s one thing he can’t ever really escape from, it’s himself.
This is only further proven after the nature of his and his brother’s existence is slowly revealed. His own death and revival leaves him a different person, but what really begins to change Sam is his brother’s death. He’s forced to figure out how to live and hunt entirely without him, and that has Sam going to lengths that would seem unnatural and perhaps even evil to other hunters.
His relationship with Ruby, a demon, separates him from his brother even further when he’s rescued from Hell. He awakens his supernatural abilities to surprising levels through the consumption of her blood, though it starts to give him demonic properties in the process, and it’s confirmed later that it was all in order to make him a suitable vessel for Lucifer himself. With the knowledge that his entire life has been primed to set himself up against his brother, the true vessel for the Archangel Michael, Sam and Dean decide to screw fate and deal with the upcoming Apocalypse themselves.
Sam proves to be as self-sacrificing as we thought him to be. He proves this once and for all, making up for his mistakes by taking Lucifer inside himself and jumping into the Cage he’d been let out of, accepting an eternity of torture in exchange for saving the world from Heaven and Hell.
Weaknesses/Temptations:
- Addiction to demon's blood
- Dean is his biggest weakness; threaten him and he'll do just about anything.
- Wants to be normal/feels unclean
- Terrified of clowns
Sins:
- Fraud (stolen identities, fake credit cards, impersonating officers/fbi)
- Murder (a whole lot of it)
- Breaking/Entering
- Theft
- Lust (that whole thing with Ruby)
- Betrayal (left behind his Dad and his brother to go to law school)
- Suicide? (jumping into hell)
- Became Lucifer's actual human vessel for a hot minute there
- Plenty of religious blasphemy
- Gluttony (demon blood addiction)
Powers/Abilities:
Sam has several abilities that were given him due to the fact that he consumed demon blood as an infant. These abilities were enhanced by drinking more demon blood later in life, though it was said that he didn’t require them to be used. Instead, they made his body stronger in preparation for Lucifer to use him as a vessel, though most of this doesn’t matter much in the context of the game. His abilities were as follows:
Premonitions - Sam would have visions, both while asleep and awake, showing him the future. These visions would give him headaches and feel incredibly real and intense.
Telekinesis - Sam could move objects with his mind, including objects that were very heavy.
Supernatural Sixth Sense - Sam could sometimes sense when an unseen supernatural force was nearby, such as a ghost.
Immunity to Demonic Attacks - this included a disease of demonic origin that created zombies.
Exorcisms/Torture - Sam could mentally torture and cause pain. Though this was only shown on demons, it’s unclear if he could have used it on other creatures/people as well. He could also send demons back to Hell with his mind, and eventually even destroy them completely.
Items:
- Ruby's Knife
- A Flask of Demon Blood
- Pistol
- Extra Clips
- Cell Phone
- Laptop
